When it comes to shooters on consoles it just seems really dummed down you know? The controls are simple, and anybody and their mother with an internet connection plays shooters shooters on consoles, which makes it easy to find a game, but unfortunately its very difficult to play a good game. I love absolutely destroying my competition and all, but sometimes it is just too easy to win in consoles.

PC gaming is for the real pros. You play WoW and if you wanna play with other people you already have to be good if you wanna have any fun. Diablo 2 you're either 99 or getting there. Halo PC you knew hwich hills were the most effective to hide behind in bloodgulch or you made your own modded maps.

The PC is just serious, which all of us are basically. I play to win baby, and have fun in the process.

It's not just the dumbed downed interface, the entire concept is dumbed down. Pretty much all of the modern “hard-core” consul games work as so:

“GRAHA-KILL-ONOWHATTHEFUCK-DIE-GIRLWITHBIGBOOBS-STUPIDJOKE-TOTALMASSACURE-PHYCOPATHICCOMMENT”

PC games have more variaty in general, and even the shooters have a bit more point.

It's like Yahtzee said in the Zero Punctuation review of Bioshock. It's just System Shock 2 dumbed down “for the console tards”. Regardless I still enjoyed it a lot (and loved the art design) but what was touted as being deep and new had already been done half a decade+ earlier on consoles.

There are exceptions to the formula of course – some games, like Fallout 3, were actually developed simulntaneously for console and PC. Also, I'm not saying console games (shooters or otherwise) are without merit. They just tend to be rather shallow in comparison to what PC games have been doing for years before.

*Reviving an old dead topic, mostly since I'm hopign everyone will come back*

I grew up almost exclusively on consoles, and I don't think I played a real PC game (past Chex Quest, which was a Doom mod based off of the cereal.  Also it was fucking fun.) until…jesus, until high school I think.  Never had the power to do it properly.

NOW I have the same Mac rig as Xander with a PC side (currently broken) that can play things very very well, despite running hot.  And ever since I conquered most of my bias with consoles that weren't Nintendo, I've broadened my game scope signifigantly.  I enjoy most of what I own and play, so I'm just about as all around as some of you guys were describing…with a little more bent towards Consoles (specifically Nintendo.  The whole sentimentality thing.)

In specific, I love platform shooters (Mega Man) and Shoot em Ups (Gradius) more than anything, with a healthy-enough love for FPS and strategy games.  Batto helped really get me into Warhammer 40k which in turn got me into Dawn of War (now I own both), which got me to enjoy RTS games.  So like I said, I like to think I have a good healthy scope going.

Threadnomancy is the bestnomancy.

I just got a ton of PC games off Steam for dirt cheap, so I'm pretty entrenched in PC world. I like it that way. My Xbox has been getting healthy use from Modern Warfare 2 and Borderlands though.

STAY AWAY FROM ME, POD PERSON!

If the Warhammer 40k MMO is any good (when it comes out in like 2 years or something) I might get into it. Otherwise, no MMOs for me. Unless Planetside 2 comes out. Same deal. Even then, it's mostly nostalgia that would make me play.

I'll play the 40k MMO provided they don't somehow botch up the Eldar in it (which I doubt), and if Planetside 2 comes out I'll be all over that with you as well.  We can be MMO BUDDEEZZZZZZZZZ.

Some concept art of the 40k MMO was released the other day, showing some Imperial and Ork stuff:

Really high quality stuff. And fear not – the developers said that all major races would be represented. I don't know exactly if this means playable, but everybody's going to be in there.

PLANETSIDE STUFF:

Here's the survey Sony put out that you can fill out. It's asking what you liked about Planetisde and what you'd want in Planetside 2: http://www.questionpro.com/aki…..id=1368989

According to SOE company president John Smedly, it will be called Planetside Next. You can read that on his blog here: http://john-smedley.livejourna…..m/833.html

I dont really see high tech MMOs really working out honestly. If everything is mechanical wheres the growth potential? How would a machine become better at anything and dear god how would the inevitable forcing of a melee class make sense if some sort of light saber type weapon is just not effective as a gun anyways? Hell how would you really have a healer with sci fi stuff? Maybe Im just being overly cynical about it. :/

I'm guessing you don't know much about Warhams!

Well, this is a really ridiculous future where instead of fighting with tactical nukes in spaceship combat, everyone decides to land on the planet and swordfight. While there are space Marines with heavy bolters (enormous machine guns) and rocket launchers, there are also Marines with jet packs and chainsaw swords. Here's a trailer for another 40k game coming out next year, which is a co-op 3rd person action game for Xbox and the like: http://xbox360.ign.com/dor/obj…..52709.html You should get a slightly better point of view from that. As for class growth – they're not robots, but men in power armor. Even then, there's tons of different kinds of humans and aliens to duke it out. As for classes, that wouldn't be hard either. There are tons of different units in the tabletop game, whether it's psychic power users, medics, troops, heavy weapon guys or what have you.

In Dawn of War II, a 40k RTS, the campaign has loot drops like Diablo. You pick up sacred armors, incendiary boltguns, and what have you. I can see something similar for this.

As for Planetside and Planetside 2 – they worked in a much different way. You'd fight like a first person shooter, and every level you'd earn certification points. You could spend these to cert in a number of skills, which would unlock things like anti tank weapons, the ability to drive gunships, and so on. You'd get these at terminals near spawning rooms. It was a really cool system, and a game where concievably a level 1 player could kill a level 30 (level cap) with ease, as it was based on player skill more than anything.

And yet everyone was still better than you.  Such a wonderfully enfuriating game.  I miss it so.

As for the 40k MMO, god I hope they don't turn it into a two-sided thing.  If WoW can pull off having multiple races and the like, then a Chaos vs Order scenarion in the 40k game would be simple.  I'm not afraid to say that if they set it up to JUST be Marines vs Orks, I won't play.  Sorry, but that's just running the Imperium bias too far.  There's no excuse to leave out other playable armies in a game universe that HAS multiple playable armies.

Well, they said all races would be represented. I understand that some races are too minor (Inquisition, Dark Eldar) or too boring to play (mindless Necrons). I think a safe bet would be “The Big Four” from Dawn of War 1 – Chaos, Imperials, Eldar and Orks. They said outright that players would not start off as ass-kicking Space Marines, and I'd assume the same for other races. I'd figure Orks would start as runty little Gretchin and Eldar would be Guardians. There's also speculation going about that it will be squad based, and you'll be leading/commanding a small squad around. I think that would be a good thing, given the epic scale 40k is meant to be at. It could even be like the Dawn of War II campaign where you pick  up loot for your sergeant while your squadmates stay pretty much the same. Who knows, it's not meant to come out for another year or two.

I'm hoping (still) for a planetside style game.  So you can opt to, through the right training and all, go from…say…a Guardian to a Dark Reaper, Fire Dragon, Howling Banshee, etc etc.  I feel like that would be a pretty sound way to run it as well.

I wanna be a Wraithguard!  Coolest blind FPS character EVER.

They confirmed it's going to be squad based, which I like, since there's no good reason a single Space Marine would be running around on a daemon world with nothing to do. I for one hope they don't let you just forgo the training and choose a class though. If that happened, we'd never see an Imperial Guardsman or scout Marine, and it would just be all Terminators, all the time.

Or an army of Imperial Guard commissars shooting each other for cowardice. Gotta love fluffy team killing.
