I'm going to skip this whole thread and simply come out saying I really, really didn't enjoy this game that much.  MAYBE on the PC for all the gloriously silly mods (Hulk Hogan as every normal zombie or Johnny Bravo as the Tank?  I'm fucking sold.)  But in all honesty, the game on it's own seemed boring and easy to me.  Not worth my money.  Too bad I can't sell anything from my collection…not even my bad stuff.  It isn't in me.

I played L4D on console and hated it. I played the demo for L4D2 on PC and enjoyed the hell out of it. Valve doesn't care about console gamers. No mods, updates, patches, or any form of support come out for any of their console games. I hated TF2 until I played it on PC. Now I enjoy it just fine.

I sure wouldn't pay $50 for L4D 1 or 2, but If they were bundled together for like $40 I'd possibly go for it.

I probably wont buy L4D2 simply because I have a carbon copy being the original already… which I dont play anymore regardless.

It's an expansion pack, really. It has a somewhat different vibe given the more distinctive setting though.
In two years when these games are cheap as dirt I'll gladly pick them up.

I just wish they were what they promised.  Strategic.  They are most definitely not.    I wasted good damn money getting it when it came out and for what…”Mow down th'a exploding dum screaming dead exploding frail stupid things~!”  >w>  I'd enjoy it more if it were…you know…a challenge.  Or if it had substance.

What I laughed at most was how they put it high on GamerPro or whatever the magazine is you get with an Edgecard subscription:  they mentioned all the “positive points” that make it amazing…and from having played it with the exception of playing the zombies on versus, every single thing was a load of crap.

-The game does not modify itself to fit your play level:  It never got harder.  Ever.  It was the same easy shit.  I only died when a tank threw me off the side of the hospital roof.

-The characters were not well written or interesting:  they never clearly explain why these people are immune to the infection (which apparently they are).  They exchange no meaningful dialogue ever outside of one segment in one mission that could VAGUELY be considered a type of cutscene (the mutating priest).  The only amount of character they show is “Time to bandage ya up!” and maybe a bit of sadness if a team-mate dies (but don't worry, they revive in closets~!)

-The game was not strategic.  If a sniper rifle (or a scoped hunting rifle…basically should be the same thing) has the same pinpoint accuracy, semi-automatic fire rate, and ammo cap as an assault rifle.  And the shotgun in the game shares  these same traits, and the pistols do to except they have INFINITE ammo (on any difficulty, so I hear), and you can just spam fire into mobs and come out safe and sound after charging through, then there is most definitely not any amount of strategy.

Honestly…I don't see what the big deal is.  The only reason you even need teammates is to help revive you.  And even that didn't make sense.  “Ho christ!  This giant invincible super mutant thing just hurled a giant piece of asphault into my ribs, which are all now powder!”  *Falls over not-dead*.  “Don't worry!”  *OFFERS A HAND!*

That's sorta a worse setup than the anime tradition of bandaids heal everything…

Anyway, sorry for the rant, I'm done for now.

The characters show, well, character, in their intermittent dialogue. The banter they have back and forth is what does it. You won't hear everything they say in one playthrough.

The game is not strategic though, you are right. I'm pretty sure I made most of those same points when I last posted in this thread like a year ago. It's just Quake.

The AI director actually does change. It does adapt, just not quite as much as you'd think. I watched a friend play – he totally sucked, and there were less zombies, special infected, and more ammunition lying around for him. I played and I was swamped with infected the entire time. This was on PC in the L4D2 demo.

As for team-mates reviving you? That's just you being nitpicky. That's a fun component that Gears of War popularized, and I support wholeheartedly. You have to figure what's for fun and dramatic:

1. Teammate dies. Everyone keeps running like we're playing Gauntlet

2. Teammate is down! Go back, fend off hordes of zombies while you save his ass and try to recover lost distance!

Left4Dead is far better on PC. The problem is it was advertised as something it wasn't. That's why I was pissed when I first played it, and crossed it off that year's Christmas list. If you think of it as a run n' gun arcade game that you can play with buddies, it's a lot better.

To me it was just ugh you had 4 maps for 2 game modes and that was it. The patch they released gave you a new lighthouse survival map, but you HAD to do it with 3 random jerkholes you found online. And as for regular gameplay, expert mode and versus mode alike, 2 competent players could mow down any level with any number of zombies no matter if they were human controlled or not. Me and Devin watched our 2 team mates run ahead of us thinking wed get left behind and die but they got rocked. So we were left behind to clean up after their effing mess (which including a tank I juked out for 2 solid minutes while it died to fire slowly) and it didnt matter if the zombies (who were human controlled this was versus) had the best luck of the AI leaving us no ammo, no med packs, no grenades, no nothing or if they all spawned as hunters at the same time while a million zombies were about. We gunned them down like they were sitting prisoners waiting to be executed. And the sad thing is, we didnt go in the safe room half alive gasping for breath like the programmers intended. We went in sprinting and went back outside to shoot the car like retards out of sheer hilarity to rub it in. You equip a shotgun and hold down the melee button whenever you run out of ammo. The only thing that could do anything to you was a smoker because it wasnt close to you. Then again your shotgun had little spread so you could probably still kill it right off the rooftop from way down on the ground. And of course the tank would slow you down but as long as you werent horribly injured you could dance around it like a monkey taking easy shots at it. After a while you dont even need anything but a shotgun if you think about it, theres no sniping involved and any automatic weapon has the same range and less firepower as the damn thing. The whole game and all of its levels were pretty much just a speed course based on how fast you could run.

Hence the Quake comparison I made. That's my problem with the Source engine – everything moves so fast and weightlessly. I can't enjoy games in that engine as anything more than light arcade fare, which is why I won't spend more than arcade prices for them.

Now, if it was paced more like Dead Rising or RE4, then we'd be talking. That's what I was hoping it would be, but alas.

Even at a slower pace the game wouldn't be very challenging.

Make the zombies not die in 1 shot then we might have something hard rofl.

There's a “realistic” mode in L4D2 where I think they need either significant damage or headshots to kill. That sounds a bit more like it.

Yeah, that's how I'd be willing to play.  Also, Batot, back a few posts, you mentioned the AI director in 2 being better.  I heard that to from a friend who has it…the fact they made it SUPREMELY different.  I've only played 1, and that damn director thing never did a single visible thing.  That's what I meant.  I'm sure 2 is more polished…Valve is good about making sequels a bit better, from what I've seen.

I wasn't aware, since I only played L4D once before playing L4D2. It basically consisted of my buddy Matt (no relation to the Woods) yelling at me and telling me what to do while we stumbled around, splitscreen, in some chaotic 4 on 4 game online. I wouldn't mind playing it online on PC, as long as I wasn't playing with pubbies. That game, however, was a living hell of frantic gameplay, loud noises, and not knowing where I was. Playing on a big screen all to yourself makes the game a LOT more enjoyable. Once L4D1 and 2 are together in some cheap as shit combo pack I'll get them.

I suppose.  Either way, I'm all for going for other things.  I may try 2 at a friends place, but that's likely it.  Or I'll get 1 for PC so I can mod the hell out of it.  :3

To Erik, the game is strategic if you're playing with the right people and not on an easy difficulty, i have a blast playing it every time.

He did play with the right people to my knowledge, and I doubt he was playing it on easy.

It's all Quake to me, really, as all Source engine games are. You're just ice skating around at rocket speed with guns that feel like really loud popguns. That works for TF2 fairly well, but everything else just feels incongrous. There was a L4D1 mod a while ago that made the game really realistic. It drastically lowered your health, took out special infected, and just made the regular zombies more movie-like in terms of durability and deadliness. I think that could be pretty tactical, since running around like an idiot would get your skull bashed in. It would at least make the game more survival/horror than blast-a-thon.

Yeah…sadly you're right on all accounts Batto.  And honestly, I fail to see any potential strategy when the gameplay involves being able to just waltz through the mob of enemies without so much as a scratch.  I find it hilarious that there's more strategy involved in playing as the special infected in the versus mode online.  That's just fucking stupid in my opinion.
